2026-01-23, 13:47 - Mark Holand: Hi Sonya. | just wanted to let you know, that if nothing is done
about the noise at workstations 3, then | will no longer sit there. For my own mental and physical
health, | can no longer sit there. | feel it is unfair to subject any student to the constant noise of
those server racks. My ears physically hurt today, and | have had progressively worse
headaches this week. If | have to, | will put a refusal for unsafe work. To subject one employee
to that noise for a day, a week, a month without hearing protection is cruel. It's not in hearing
protection range, but is definitely within the range where | start to where protection. Just
because ambient is 55db, doesn't mean there aren't spikes approaching 85db. But, | can not
wear hearing protection because | need to be able to hear the instructor. I'm a little annoyed to
have even been placed in this position. Just letting you know where I'm at with this, so you are
not surprised on Monday, if nothing is done. Thank you. Sorry for venting.

2026-01-23, 13:50 - Mark Holand: | mean | am annoyed to be placed in the position, that iam
the one how has to complain, because it should have been immediately obvious to anyone, that
the student sitting at workstation 3, would have to deal with an unacceptable level on constant
noise.

2026-01-23, 14:23 - Mark Holand: And to emphasize the ridiculousness of it, | file a work refusal
just to ad to the ridiculousness off it. Then each amd every student who sits at that workstations,
will have to been shown my work refusal, and decided for themselves if they want to be
subjected to and hindered in their studies by that noise.

2026-01-23, 14:57 - +1 (604) 445-1907: Hi Mark,

Thank you for letting me know and | appreciate you being upfront about how the noise at
workstation 3 has been affecting you. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been experiencing ear pain
and headaches. That’s obviously not conducive to learning and your health and ability to focus
are important.

| understand your frustration, especially if this feels like something that should have been
identified earlier. | don’t see this as venting and | appreciate you flagging it before Monday so
we're not reacting in the moment.

Safety did complete sound readings at workstation 3 and found the levels to be within an
acceptable range, measuring approximately 56-63 dB. | do understand that while the readings
fall within acceptable limits, the constant background noise still presents challenges in a
learning environment, especially given that hearing protection isn’t a practical option during
instruction.

Unfortunately, from an infrastructure perspective, it is not something that is easily fixed and
therefore, not much can be done by Monday.

My sort of solution for next week is to spend more time in the Control Room, so we are
downstairs less, and for the instruction portion of it, to have you or someone else share a
