PERSONAL IMPACT STATEMENT

Mark Holand
WorkSafeBC Claim — Workplace Noise Injury — January 12, 2026
BCRTC — OMC1 Control Training Room

Whol Am

| am not a person who complains. In 30 years of working | have never filed a workplace injury
claim. | have never received a demerit on my driver's licence.

| have worked in heavy industry my entire career — tower rigging, remote CN northern line
signal maintenance for 12 years from Smithers to Prince Rupert, data cabling, rotomolding plant
management, Thornton Yard, bridge tender. | am the person who buys a better safety helmet
than the company provides because the standard issue is not good enough. | wear safety
glasses when nobody else does. | colour code track protection forms and download them from
SharePoint — the only service person who knew how — because precision matters to me.

| am safety conscious to my core.

Before January 12, 2026

| had been working as a Guideway Service Person at BCRTC for 2.5 years. | was by all
accounts one of the best. | performed maintenance nobody else did. | kept equipment clean and
organized during slack time. | was the most organized Alpha Holder my department had.

| had been working toward becoming a Control Operator since the day | was hired in September
2023. | passed the written exam. | passed the simulator. | nailed the interview. New clothes, new
shoes, new shirt and tie. | was ready.

My training was supposed to start November 17, 2024, but my department held me back due to
operational constraints. | was on a family vacation in France when HR called at midnight Paris
time. | tracked down the number, called back immediately, and handled everything by email that
same night.

| found out | was being held back not from my manager, not from HR, not from any official
communication — but from a friend who heard it secondhand from a contact in another
department. That was the only information | was ever given, until | physically intercepted my
manager as he was walking to his car. A decision that affected my career, my training, and my
family received no direct communication from Guideway management. Not a phone call. Not an
email. Not a conversation. Nothing.

When January 12 finally came, | was optimized. Not drinking. Not smoking. Taking CoQ10. New
prescription progressive lenses already producing a noticeable reduction in migraines. | had
reduced my sumatriptan usage by 33% in just six months through deliberate, disciplined lifestyle
intervention. | had what | called a migraine reduction program — not formally documented, but
always active. Always researching, always improving.
