translink.ca FAQ: WSBCI/LTD Pension Deeming Why should | apply for Long-term Disability when | am in receipt of WorkSafe BC benefits? e While you are in receipt of wage loss benefits for a WorkSafe BC (WSBC) claim, (WSBC benefits are paid through your Employer), you continue to make pension contributions and accrue pensionable service under the Public Service Pension Plan (PSPP). If you remain on a WSBC claim for a period in excess of 26 weeks, you may qualify to have your pension and LTD contributions waived (this is called pension “deeming”). This can result in significant financial savings to you as you do not have to pay your pension contributions and LTD premiums. How do I qualify? e To qualify for pension deeming, you must submit a claim to Canada Life by completing the steps below and be approved under BCRTC’s Canada Life LTD Plan. What happens if | am approved? e If your LTD claim is approved by Canada Life, you will continue to accumulate pensionable and contributory service in the PSPP as if you were working. You do not have to pay your pension contributions and LTD premiums for the period that your LTD claim is approved. If my LTD claim is approved, will | receive LTD benefits? e If you are approved for LTD, you will not receive LTD benefits (payments) from Canada Life as you cannot be in receipt of WSBC benefits as well as benefits from the LTD Plan at the same time. Your WSBC benefits will continue for the duration of your approved WSBC claim. What happens if my LTD claim is not approved, or | don’t apply? e If your claim is not approved under the Canada Life LTD Plan (or if you do not apply), then you will continue paying pension contributions and LTD premiums. What happens if | am not eligible for LTD? e If you are not eligible for LTD, you will continue paying pension contributions to the PSPP if applicable.
